11 Impressive Women Awarded Scholarships at NEW Luncheon
At a virtual luncheon on Tuesday, December 1st, the Network of Executive Women (NEW) held their annual scholarship awards luncheon on Zoom. They welcomed an audience of more than 50 people including scholarship recipients, their guests, special guests and members of the NEW organization.
For more than 40 years, NEW has been dedicated to helping support the educational goals of women, in order to assist them in improving their lives and their financial security.
“We are here today because of the inspiration and traditions of the women that came before us. We are here to celebrate what makes our organization special and different,” said NEW’s President Beth Stoller.
The organization, founded in 1979 by Phyllis Holt, was based on Holt’s belief that women needed to help women. The scholarship program is the flagship program of the organization. The funds raised throughout the year go directly to making these scholarships a reality. This year NEW presented scholarships to 11 impressive women in need who, after a break in their education are continuing on in pursuit of their goals. The scholarships help pay for tuition at their chosen schools.
Among the 11 were four special scholarships, The Phyllis Holt Scholarship, the Donna Marino Scholarship offered by her family in memory of past president Donna Marino, the Virginia Allen Scholarship, honoring Allen’s 20-year dedication as chairperson of the scholarship program, and the Milford Chamber of Commerce Scholarship.
The amazing women who received these awards are as follows:
Danica Blue of New Haven, who is attending Governor’s University to pursue a BS in Human Resource Management.
Vanessa Chesney of Bridgeport, who is attending Naugatuck Community College, to pursue an Associates Degree in Nursing.
Jennifer Edward of Bridgeport, who is attending Western Connecticut University, to pursue a Bachelors Degree in Communications.
Shirley Edward of Stamford, who is attending Charter Oak Community College, to pursue a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration.
Iran Cruz Hernandez of Shelton, who is attending Southern Connecticut State, to pursue a Bachelors Degree in Psychology.
Karen Mason of Wallingford, who is attending Paier College of Art, to pursue a Masters of Fine Art.
Megan Grasley of Danbury, who is attending Charter Oak Community College, to pursue a Bachelors in Business Administration.
Olga Elizabeth Cruz Rivera of Bridgeport, who is attending Southern Connecticut State, to pursue a Bachelors in Social Work.
Elman Rodriguez of Bridgeport, who is attending University of Bridgeport, to pursue a Bachelors Degree in Social Work.
Ilisi Claudette Saca Chinchilla of Naugatuck, who is attending University of New Haven, to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice.
Melissa Zepeda Lopez, who is attending Housatonic Community College, to pursue a degree in Nursing.
To fund next year’s scholarships, tickets are now on sale for NEW’s Comedy Night fundraiser on Saturday, May 1st 2021. NEW is always grateful for the support of our current and future sponsors, most especially our Gold level sponsors: Executive Cleaners and Wanda Carlson - State Farm Insurance. Our Silver Sponsors: Milford Bank and Fred Astaire Dance Studios of Orange. Sponsorship details and tickets for all events can be found on: https://networkofexecutivewomen.org/
NEW welcomes professional women to attend two events as guests before applying for membership. Luncheon meetings are held virtually on the first Tuesday of each month, and there are several Network at Night events throughout the year.
